Promoting policies to abolish policing
As chairperson of the City of San Diego’s Public Safety Committee, Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe has promoted the so called "Protect Act", a law that restricts police protection by preventing investigations of DUIs, domestic violence protective orders and other crimes, reducing the ability of police to question suspicious persons, restricts officers from stopping dangerous vehicles, prohibits checking for outstanding warrants and bans enforcement of probation and parole.
Supports defunding the police
